Where Should You Get Bridal Alterations?

by | Sep 28, 2020

Your wedding gown is a huge investment. Possibly the largest investment for a piece of clothing that you’ll make in your entire life! Because of that, it’s so important to make sure that a seamstress you completely trust does your alterations. But trying to figure out where to get alterations can be challenging! In today’s blog, we’re going to go through the differences between getting your wedding dress alterations through a bridal shop vs. from a list of recommended seamstresses that your bridal shop gives you. Here at K&B Bridals, we provide our brides with a list of seamstresses that we highly trust and recommend to you. This is our preferred method of finding a seamstress for your wedding dress alterations, and here’s why!

USING A RECOMMENDED LIST FOR BRIDAL ALTERATIONS

As we said above, here at K&B we provide all of our brides (and bridesmaids, mothers, etc.) with a list of recommended seamstresses. We have vetted and completely trust these seamstresses to take care of you and your wedding gown. You can choose from any of the seamstresses on our list. Or if you already know of a seamstress that you trust with your wedding dress, you can absolutely use them instead! Here are some of the major benefits of using a list of recommended seamstresses for your wedding dress alterations.

You get to shop around

A major benefit of using a list of recommended seamstresses for your wedding dress alterations is that it gives you the ability to shop around! You can give all of them a call to see what their availability is like and to find out their experience level. You can also meet with more than one of them so that they can take a look at your dress in-person. They’ll give you an idea of the alterations that they will do, as well as an estimated quote on pricing.

All of the options are highly trusted

When you are using our list of recommended seamstresses, you can be sure that they are highly trusted by us! Because we use a list of seamstresses rather than an in-shop seamstress, we make sure that all of the seamstresses on our list are top-quality and have a lot of experience with bridal.

USING AN IN-SHOP SEAMSTRESS FOR BRIDAL ALTERATIONS

Alternatively, some bridal shops choose to have an in-store seamstress rather than providing you with a list of recommended seamstresses. Although this makes it a lot easier to choose your seamstress with only one option, there are some definite downsides to this.

They might become overwhelmed with too many requests

When only one seamstress is working out of a bridal shop, they can end up getting overwhelmed with so many requests. If everyone that purchases a dress is using the same seamstress, then that can add up to too much work for them! When so much work starts piling up on one seamstress, then the dates for when your dress will be ready could start to get pushed back. This can lead to customers having to purchase their dress earlier. If you end up buying your dress too close to your wedding date, then you might risk the in-shop seamstress not having enough time to get your alterations done with so many other customers.

Their experience level could be a concern

It’s no secret that there is a shortage of bridal seamstresses in the industry. Because of this, many bridal shops end up training a seamstress in a very short timeframe before they start working. Besides, many experienced bridal seamstresses prefer to work for themselves. A lack of experience can be super concerning to customers, and for a very good reason! As we’ve mentioned, you’ve made a huge investment in your wedding dress. You don’t want to risk anything happening to it in the alterations process. For this reason, it’s important to ask the shop how much experience the seamstress has. You might be pleasantly surprised and find that they have someone who has been doing this for years! If you find out that they have been doing bridal alterations for less than a year, then you may be better off finding a more experienced seamstress on your own. Do you have any friends or family members who have recently gotten married? Ask them who they recommend!

IN-STORE VS. RECOMMENDED LIST FOR BRIDAL ALTERATIONS

As you can see, we think that a recommended list of seamstresses is a far better option than an in-shop seamstress! They tend to have more experience and can be more flexible with the number of customers that they’re helping. Plus, a list gives you the option to shop around from a list of trusted seamstresses.
