Jan 5, 2022

So, you feel like you’re at the point in your relationship where you are ready to get engaged? That’s so exciting! But — do you know if your partner is ready for an engagement, too? Today, we’re talking about whether or not you should hint to your partner that you’re ready to get engaged. There are a few different factors that would affect our answer to that question!

SHOULD YOU HINT TO YOUR PARTNER THAT YOU’RE READY TO GET ENGAGED?

Let’s go through some of our tips on dropping hints to your partner about engagement! Should you do it at all? And, what types of hints should you drop?

Should you drop hints?

This is a loaded question, because it really depends on your relationship. In general, we advise staying away from simply dropping hints. This can cause your partner to feel pressured or rushed. Getting engaged is also a really big deal! It’s a huge life decision, so it isn’t really something that you should just drop hints about without having ever talked about getting married.

Have a serious conversation

Our biggest piece of advice to “hint” to your partner that you’re ready to get engaged is to sit down and have a serious conversation about it. As we mentioned before, getting engaged is a huge commitment and it isn’t something to take lightly! We’re talking about marriage here — you’ll be committing to be with this person forever. That’s a pretty big step!

If marriage is not something that you’ve ever talked about in your relationship, then now is the time. You may be ready for an engagement, but does your partner even want to get married? It’s important to figure out where each of you sees your relationship going! Sitting down to have a serious conversation about this can be intimidating and scary, especially if you have never talked about these things before. But we promise that it will help you out so much, no matter which way the conversation goes!

Talk about proposals and rings

Now, if you know that you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to getting married, then it’s definitely okay to drop certain hints here and there. If you see a couple get engaged on TV, or you know a couple that got engaged in your life… comment on the proposal to your partner! Tell them what you liked and didn’t like. This will tell him/her that engagement/marriage is on your mind. It also gives them some ideas on how you’d like to be proposed to!

The same goes for rings. When you see a ring, either on TV, social media, or on a newly engaged loved one — comment on it to your partner! Tell them what you like and don’t like about it. Heck, you could even be as bold as sending them your Pinterest board full of styles that you like! My husband knew exactly what type of ring I wanted, and was able to customize it to be absolutely perfect.

This way, your partner knows the types of rings that you do and don’t like while they’re shopping. We suggest talking to them about silhouettes, band colors, and stone setting. However, we also suggest not mentioning a price or a size. This should really be up to them if they’re paying for it! However, if you already share finances, then that might be worth a conversation, too.
