While choosing your bridesmaid dress colors for your wedding day is totally a personal preference, so many brides get stuck and overwhelmed when trying to choose. This is totally normal! Take a step back and consider some of these things that we’re going to cover to help you choose colors.
8 Tips for Choosing Your Bridesmaid Dress Colors
Here are some of our top tips for choosing your bridesmaid dress colors!
1. Wedding day color palette
First, you’ll want to think about your overall wedding day color palette. You likely have two or three colors that you’re planning your decor, flowers, etc. around for the wedding day! Think about the colors and try to decide if you just want to use one of those for your bridesmaids, or a couple of them.
If you don’t have your wedding day color palette figured out at all yet, that’s okay! Keep reading for more ideas on how to choose bridesmaid dress colors.
2. Season of wedding
A good way to choose bridesmaid dress colors is to think about the season that you’re getting married in. Fall and winter tend to favor darker, moodier colors while spring and summer favor light and vibrant colors. Of course, you don’t have to follow this, but it’s a good place to start when you are stuck! Here are some examples of colors for each season:
Fall:
- Black
- Deep yellow
- Dusty blue
- Gray
- Plum
Winter:
- Black
- Dark green
- Dusty blue
- Blush
- Burgundy/Wine
Spring:
- Dusty blue
- Lilac/lavender
- Shades of pink
- Peach
- Sage green
Summer:
- Bright orange
- Bold yellow
- Navy
- Green
- Red
3. Venue
You might also want to think about the venue that you’re getting married in. The venue truly sets the stage for your entire wedding day, so you will want to choose colors that complement it! Here are some ideas for various types of venues:
Barn/rustic:
- Sage green
- Light pink
- Burgundy/Wine
- Slate blue
- Dusty orange
Garden:
- Lavender
- Blush
- Pale blue
- Pale yellow
- Peach
Ballroom/Mansion:
- Champagne
- Gold
- Black and white
- Light peach
- Blush and navy
Vineyard:
- Gold
- Wine/burgundy
- Champagne
- Ivory
- Navy
4. Mismatched or coordinated
Next, think about whether or not you want to have your bridesmaids all wear the same color or have them choose between a couple of different shades/colors. This is completely your own personal preference and there’s no right or wrong answer!
5. Bride’s dress + groom’s attire
Another thing to consider is the bride’s dress and groom’s attire (if you have that figured out). You don’t want the bridesmaids to clash with either one! For example, if the bride is straying away from the classic white/ivory, then you will need to take that into consideration. Also, if the groom/groomsmen are wearing navy suits, then you might not want your bridesmaids to wear black (or vice versa). Again, this is all personal preference, though!
6. Consider skin tones
You’ll also want to consider the skin tones of your bridesmaids. You don’t want to choose colors that will wash them out.
7. Trendy vs classic
Finally, consider if you want to choose more “classic” colors or more “trendy” colors. Trendy colors can be so fun, but do you think that you’ll look back and regret it? On the flip side, if you are one to showcase your personality, then you might feel like more classic colors are too boring.
