Whether you’re the bride, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, or a grandmother, figuring out dress shopping can be a little tricky. Hopefully this article can help you feel a little bit more at ease before you start the process!

OUR TIPS FOR MOTHER’S DRESS SHOPPING
Here are all of our tips for you for mother’s dress shopping for your wedding!
Start early
You will want to start shopping for mother’s dresses on the earlier side, rather than later. Keep in mind that you’ll need to leave time for alterations, too! We suggest starting to shop about six to eight months for the wedding. This will likely be at a point where you have already bought your wedding dress, as well as chosen bridal party dresses. This makes it very easy to coordinate everyone’s dresses!
Coordinate colors
Nowadays, there are really no set rules as to what colors the mothers should or shouldn’t wear. It’s completely up to you! We suggest having them complementing the bridal party colors — not matching them, and not clashing with them. Gray, navy, blush, and gold are some very popular options for mother’s dresses!
Consider logistics
You’ll want to consider the logistics of the wedding when choosing what the mother’s will be wearing. This includes the season of the wedding, the type of venue, and more.
Why does this matter? Well, for example, if you are having a rustic barn wedding, then you probably won’t be choosing an ornate, fancy gown for the mother (although you totally could).
Have the mother of bride and mother of groom coordinate
Again, nowadays, there are really no set rules for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom. Traditionally, the mother of the bride would shop for her dress first, which would then dictate what the mother of the groom would be wearing. However, this doesn’t have to be the case! If possible, have the mothers talk to each other to coordinate with each other before shopping. You could even have them go shopping together!
Typically, you won’t have the mothers match, but you would have them coordinate with each other.
Talk to her!
This is probably our most important tip. Talk to each other. Brides, talk to your mom and mother-in-law about what you’re imagining for them to wear. Find out if there’s anything that they would be uncomfortable wearing.
Some things to discuss are: how formal the day will be, the color palette you’re wanting her to wear, and the overall style you’re envisioning.
We always say that pictures are better than words, so show her some inspo that you have saved!
Be flexible
This tip goes for both the bride and the mother. Mothers… be willing to try on what your daughter is requesting, even if you think that you might not like it. She has a specific vision for her wedding and it’s helpful if you are willing to support her every step of the way! On the flip side, brides, be understanding if there is something that your mother/mother-in-law is uncomfortable wearing. Maybe she doesn’t feel comfortable in a strapless gown, or she doesn’t want something form-fitting… try to be understanding and flexible!
